Produced in April 1962, this model marks an important stage in Canon’s engineering — it was one of their first to combine electric motor drive, automatic exposure (Electric Eye), and motorised zoom.
Film format: Regular 8 (Double-8), using 7.5 m reels.
Lens: 10–40 mm f/1.7, 4× zoom, 12 elements in 7 groups.
With the included wide-converter, focal length becomes 6.5–26 mm, allowing a true wide-angle field of view.
Focusing: manual, from 1.2 m to infinity, via rotation of the front lens group.
Zooming: motorised zoom, approximately 4 seconds from 10 → 40 mm; also supports manual zooming.
Exposure: fully automatic aperture control via a CdS (cadmium sulphide) meter, coupled to the filming speed (EE = Electric Eye).
Metering range: 10 – 80,000 cd/m², with working range across f/1.7–22 and film ISO from 5 to 320.
Frame rates: 12, 16, 24 fps, plus single frame.
Drive: powered by a micro-motor, allowing continuous filming over full reel length.
Power: uses 4 × AA (1.5 V) batteries for the motor drive.
Meter power: originally designed for a 1.3 V M-N mercury cell for the CdS meter.
Rewind: manual crank for accurate rewinding and film counter reset.
Shutter: 165° shutter opening.
